Caring for Braces

It is so so important to keep your braces and teeth clean during orthodontic treatment. Braces trap more food than teeth without braces so it will take you extra time to thoroughly clean your teeth. We recommend brushing three times a day (or after every big meal) and flossing once a day. We also recommend using a fluoride mouth rinse at night just before bed to help protect your teeth and keep them healthy. Keeping your teeth clean is very important because it will prevent you from developing white spots on your teeth. White spots or “decalcification” are a weakening of the outside layer of your tooth. Once these spots develop, they are permanent, so you really want to make sure you are taking great care of your teeth while in braces. And if you brush and floss your teeth well during braces, there will be no marks left on your teeth once your braces come off. Clean teeth and healthy gums also allow for faster orthodontic visits as it is easier to tie in your wires. We want you to have the most brilliant, beautiful teeth and smile when you finish your orthodontic treatment! Please see the videos below for specific instructions on how to brush and floss with braces.

Also, it is important for you to schedule your routine dental exam and cleaning every 6 months during your orthodontic treatment. Remember, routine preventative care is required to ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy.

  • Discomfort

Because your teeth are not used to moving, the first few days after you start your orthodontic treatment can make your teeth sore. If you should experience any discomfort after a visit, we suggest you take an over the counter pain medication to alleviate soreness. (Please consult your physician if you have any allergies to medication).

Thankfully, orthodontic emergencies are rare but if you are experiencing a situation that cannot be addressed on your own, we are available to you. Please call our office so we can get you scheduled to address your concern.

Often, orthodontic problems can be temporarily solved at home until you can be seen at our office. Following, are some instructions on how to deal with common orthodontic issues. If you are able to alleviate your discomfort on your own, we still recommend that you call our office to see if you need to come in for a visit. Orthodontic appliances that are damaged or loose can cause problems with treatment if left unchecked for too long.
